Trauma surgery is a specialized field of emergency medicine focused on the surgical repair of injury caused by an impact, such as a car accident, gunshot wound, stabbing or other traumatic injury. Generally, trauma surgeons are involved in the resuscitation and stabilization of patients in life threatening condition through surgical means. After the patient is stabilized, the trauma surgeon may or may not be involved in the monitoring of the patient.
Trauma surgeons are tasked with evaluating the patient and performing invasive surgery to repair any extensive damage that may be present, such as severe hemorrhaging. In especially traumatic injuries, vital organs such as the lungs or heart may be damaged and require immediate surgery in order to save the patient’s life – this is often performed by a trauma surgeon. Other injuries that may require the services of a trauma surgeon include spine and spinal cord injuries, severe head injuries and severe injuries to limbs.
Trauma surgeons are highly skilled and qualified professionals that trained in general surgery, as well as the thoracic and vascular surgical specialties. These surgeons must be able to perform surgeries with little to no warning time, and be able to make life-changing decisions. Trauma surgery is very stressful and complex, yet very fulfilling medical specialty.
